Abstract

Ubiquitous access to the internet anytime, anywhere, from any device, will bring entirely new forms of communication and commerce. The emergence of what we call the "Wireless Internet" signals the joining of two of the fastest-growing technologies in history: wireless telecommunications and the internet. The pace of change in the wireless world has been nothing short of amazing over the past 15 years, with no consistency other than the continual ability of industry analysts to underestimate the magnitude of the opportunity. Analog networks have been replaced almost entirely by new digital technologies. Now, these second generation (2G) digital technologies are about to be replaced by higher capacity, higher-speed third generation (3G) networks. Wireless subscribers are projected to reach one billion by 2002, approximately 20 years after the first cellular networks were deployed. Untethered Internet users will become accustomed to receiving e-mail, stock quotes, driving directions and other timely information from the Web. Business users will enjoy the ability to access corporate intranets and virtual private networks (VPNs) from a personal digital assistant (PDA) or laptop connected to the mobile network.

It is important for operators to provide cost-effective Wireless Internet services, and carriers will try to keep from becoming a "dumb pipe" by controlling the look and feel of the wireless access device. Nortel believes the next Internet wave will be accomplished by combining industry leading optical technology with a strong IP core competency and advanced wireless access technology.

Resume

Lloyd Carney

President, Wireless Internet Network Solutions

Mr. Carney was appointed president of the Nortel Networks Wireless Internet Solutions organization in March 2000. He is responsible for capitalizing on synergies across Nortel Networks' broad portfolio - especially its strength in Optical - to secure the companyís position as a market-making global leader in Wireless Internet. His team will create market disruptions by defining new applications and services that create wealth for our customers. In his previous role with Nortel Networks as president, Enterprise Data Division, Mr. Carney managed P&L, design and product marketing responsibilities for the routers, hubs, switches, network management and Wireless LAN portfolio, including BayStack[tm], Optivity[tm], Netgear[tm], Accelar[tm] and Passport[tm]. These products were designed to meet the LAN/WAN IP requirements for customers ranging from the home office user to the Fortune 500 enterprise.

Prior to this role, Mr. Carney had product marketing and development responsibilities as executive vice president at Bay Networks, a company created through the merger of Wellfleet and Synoptics, and since acquired by Nortel Networks.

Mr. Carney was one of the early engineers at Wellfleet when it was a pre-IPO start-up focused on Wide Area Network Multi-Protocol routers. Following its IPO, Wellfleet was the fastest-growing Fortune 1000 company for two years. Mr. Carney advanced within Wellfleet to become director of technical operations and later had responsibility for worldwide customer service. He successfully opened customer service centers in Valbonne (France), Tokyo and Sidney.

Before joining Wellfleet, Mr. Carney was an engineering manager at pre-IPO start-up, Proteon, which focused on token ring LAN adapter cards and developed an early WAN router.

Mr. Carney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering technology and a Master degree in Applied Business Management.
