Semiconductor and design automation companies often come up with buzz words and marketing tag lines first, and then a few years later really start to deliver. Is SOC really something that designers are designing today? Is it making economic sense from designer, supplier and end customer standpoints? There are still some areas of SOC design, manufacturing and design tools that are evolving. Come join us for this lively discussion where you will hear different industry pundits talking about the reality of SOC and how that affects your daily life.

Session 17 - Panel Discussion: Outsourcing Design - Blessing or Curse?

8:00pm

Organizers:
Jose M. Cruz, Sun Microsystems
Kris Iniewski, PMC-Sierra Inc.

Moderator:
John Kibarian, President, PDF Solutions

Panelists:
Carl Dobbs, CEO, The Silicon Group
Colin Harris, VP of IC Technology, PMC-Sierra
Nancy Nettleton, Manager, ASIC Design, Sun Microsystems
Glen Noufer, President, TreeHouse Design
Alex Shubat, CTO, VP of Engineering, Virage Logic
Bob Wiederhold, VP & General Manager of World Wide Services, Cadence

Proponents of outsourcing IC design can argue that this will simplify company operations, resulting in lower costs. Furthermore IC outsourcing may be the next logical step in an industry that has been largely successful by outsourcing other IC operations, such as IC fabrication and IC testing.

However, proponents of internal IC design may argue that inhouse design gives electronic companies more control in the development of their own specific products. Internal designs can result in higher performance and faster time to market.

Please come hear what industry leaders have to say about these alternatives. You are encouraged to ask your own questions or give your opinions about how IC design should be done in the future.
